Getting software for “free” sounds like a promising proposition, but its value for true enterprise mobile management and security remains questionable. There are lot of talks about Microsoft’s first attempt to MDM market called “Intune” and of course there is Airwatch, Mobile Iron and the rest. Let’s see where these stack up.

Intune has consistent Flat design Dashboard a similar design approach to Office 365/Azure . Being a Microsoft Product it Integrates with Azure AD nicely as expected. In product page Microsoft is claiming “Microsoft Intune gives you the flexibility and control to secure your data on any device—even those you don’t manage.” Correct? Yes and No.

Microsoft has been doing most of the heavy lifting such as Patching and Deployment by SCCM. But Intune is completely separate and of course you will have to pay the licensing (upto $19 per user) separately.

Now lets answer some questions that matters to you and your business.

-Does it meet your enterprise security requirements with certifications from FISMA, FedRAMP, NIST, ISO 27001 and SOC-2 Type II?
-Will your users demand intuitive native-like, enterprise app catalog experiences for all major platforms?
-Are a robust assortment of automated compliance rules and enforcement actions essential for effective security?
-Do you need a single secure container for unified email, app and content access with built-in encryption?
-What about mobile malware protection?
-Will you have to pay more for a more robust Intune suite than the one that you were initially quoted?

If you answered Yes to any of these questions, Intune lacks what you need. All of this considered, are you willing to trust Microsoft for all your mobile initiatives?

As a first approach they have done ok .But as I mentioned it’s their first approach. You might want to wait and check the features and pricing of other market leaders. Intune is still an immature product that lacks many of the core features and workflows needed to securely manage all of the devices that access your corporate data, apps and content.
